This guide is tested on Moto X4 XT1900-4 and XT1900-7 variant with Android 8.0 Oreo and patch level October 1, 2018. That is, your device should be on software version OPW27.2.5 (openmx) or OPWS27.2.5 (reteu) to install the Pie update manually. First check your software version and then try the below method to upgrade your phone to Android 9 Pie.

Installation Instruction
- Download Android 9 Pie OTA update [here/source] and place it in the root directory of internal storage.
- Now, enable Storage access for Motorola Update Service. To do so, go to Apps > tap 3 dot menu > select Show System > enable storage permission.
- Now, go to Settings > About phone > System updates to update your phone.
- After rebooting, enjoy Android 9 Pie. Note that this method will not alter your software channel. It should be the same. All your apps should be in place. In addition, no need a software reset. (source – xda)
